Module 3 Blog Posting - EDUC 6812

How do Professional Development Schools (PDSs) and/or PLCs create opportunities for teachers to become leaders?

Teachers are asked to become a part of the partnership by not only educating students but also educating and mentoring young teacher candidates. Teachers are asked to discover new technologies and instructional methods and use those methods in their classroom.

What examples of teacher leadership do you see in your PDS, or what do you think might emerge if your school were to become a PDS?

My school is not a PDS school and I feel that it would greatly benefit it it was. My school has many educators who are still focused on the traditional ways of teaching, they could use the inspiration of incorporating these new technologies into the classroom to aid instruction. I think they remain on the traditional methods because they are not exposed to enough of the new technologies. We do have tech Tuesdays, an after school training program, however if the school was to be partnered with a University they would be able to see the research and benefits of incorporating these new technologies and instructional methods into the classroom.

What examples of PLCs do you see in your school or organization? Have teacher leaders emerged from these PLCs?

In my school we have an after school program in which teachers are compensated for their time and professional development. It is called Tech Tuesdays - about every Tuesday the TIS for the county provides instruction and training on ways of incorporating new technologies into classroom instruction. Some of the trainings have been about - online grading systems, webquests, google features, and CPS responders. This is a great 1 hour training session held about every week and it is voluntary as to when and how often teachers would like to attend. For the most part the trainings are very beneficial and have a good output. One of the other good factors about this program is that it is an ongoing training and not a one day workshop offered. The TIS that teaches these instructional methods was in fact a teacher before taking on this position, as many educators that complete these trainings end up working in the board office or as administrators in their school.

There are at least three paths for teacher leaders; one that leads out of the classroom and into an administrative role (principal or central office staff), one for teachers who remain in their classrooms to develop and share a deeper knowledge base about teaching, and one that bridges the two previously mentioned paths that is for teachers who spend part of their time in a classroom and part of their time taking on additional administrative and professional development responsibilities. If you were designing a program or professional development intended to prepare teacher leaders to take advantage of these multiple pathways, what would it look like? What learning experiences would you include?

I think that it is important for educators to understand what is happening in the improvements of instruction and technology integration. I believe if I was to design a program it would definitely have a part that focused on instruction and technology integration to improve student learning and understanding. I think that it is important to have an ongoing communication with the educators, so this is not just a one-shot training but an ongoing and continuous training. I would like to receive feedback and input from the educators concerning what works in the classroom and what does not work, having times set aside for discussion on areas of improvement and collaboration of success or failures in the area of instruction or teaching. I feel that educators could learn a great deal from this method and it would be very beneficial. It would be nice if we could find a way to compensate the educators for their time, but as funds are limited in the educational system, that might be one of the harder tasks.

Module 2 Overview


As I was reading the first two readings on our Model 2, I became aware that it is very important that educators understand the difference of using technology as an amplifier and actually using technology as part of the instruction and learning process. Our common uses of technology such as using a projector and powerpoint is just using technology to ampify the content already being taught. However if you give students a critical thinking question and ask them to research possible answers, evaluate the accuracy and reliability of those answers, and report their answers to your or the class - you are in fact incorporating technology into the instruction process.

International Society for Technology in Education

The importance of these standards are their focus of reforming education to a process where we are teaching the students how to think rather than how to memorize. By following the NETS standards we are asking our students to use higher order thinking skills to complete assignments and using instructional techniques that encourage and require these higher order thinking skills. Teachers considering leadership in the school need to understand these changes and encourage them to help better prepare our students for the work world they are about to enter.

National Board For Profession Teaching Standards

The National Board For Profession Teaching Standards has developed guidelines for the Teacher Leadership Certification based on feedback from principals and teachers with the idea of where education should go in the future. The purpose of this certification is to make teaching more credible as a profession rather than some job people fell into because they could pursue the on the wanted. Teaching is as important as being a doctor, to be anything you must be educated by a Teacher. NBTS Certification is a reform of education moving forward and a commitment to uphold the highest standards of learning and education.

West Virginia Professional Teaching Standards

I believe that all of the standards focus on the quality of the educator as being a leader in the classroom. And standards 4 and 5 focus on Teacher Leadership in the School and Community as well as development. Standard 1 focuses on the incorporation of technology into the curriculum.

Interview with Gayle Moller

As an new educator I have experienced some instances with leadership, but I am sure as I continue to teach I will have many more experiences to talk about. As a Business Teacher I have been working with the student organization DECA, this is a business club in our High School. I have taken on the internship to say, of becoming the DECA Adviser for next year. My administrators have been helpful in aiding in the development of the programing and providing the necessary materials and opportunities for the students. However, I would not say that the responsibility is shared or distributed evenly, rather as needed the administration will provide aid in the leadership process, but only when needed. I think that Moller is correct in the first of her reasons to promote teacher leadership (1) Teachers must be praised for taking on additional roles and the additional work they are willing to do for the educational system. (2) Teachers put forth more effort and time - therefore they should be compensated for their time and effort. I know that I am scheduled to spend my weekend supervising students at the state compensation, and I had to complete paper work so I can be reimbursed for my expenses. It is ridiculous that we are working our weekends and fighting to get our money back for traveling expenses - when we should in fact be compensated for the work that we are doing. (3) I believe that improving the educational environment to promote teacher leadership is crucial to the increasing of leaders in the school system.

Technology Integration Initiative

The focus of my Technology Integration Initiative will be the use of technology in the classroom and how to help educators differentiate between using technology as an amplifier and as an educational tool. I have created a survey for the faculty members at my school to take to provide me with data on this focus. To view the survey please click on the link labeled below. I have sent an email to my principal asking him to approve the survey and forward to all faculty members to complete. As communications have continued with administration the deadline for the Survey is March 9, 2012.
